Stage 1: Trimming

First, I cut off the excess with power saws, usually diamond tipped blades.
Then, I start roughing out the shape with the pointer tool.

Stage 2: Roughing

I continue by using the pointer tool to gradually take off layer after layer.

Stage 3: Shaping

Once the general shape emerges, I switch to the claw tool and shape the stone in the direction of the flow of the form.

Stage 4: Fine Shaping

I next progress to the claw tool with smaller teeth.  I peel off layer after layer until the form is completely realized.

Stage 5: Smoothing

Using the flat and rondel tools, I shave off the grooves left by the claw.

Stage 6: Filing/Sanding/Polishing

If needed, I now file with a rasp.  I use minute files for curves and trouble spots.
Then I start sanding, beginning at 35 or 60 grid sandpaper, moving up through the various grits until I achieve the desired polish.  For a high shine, I sand with water up to 6000 grit and use oil soap with a buffing cloth—especially for marble.

Stage 7: Mounting

Lastly, I create the mounting, making sure that it both fits the mood of the piece and holds up the weight of the stone.  If a hole must be drilled into the sculpture, I do this before sanding the piece.

Stage 8:

I break open a bottle of wine and rest. smile
